Are Shrooms Legal in Nova Scotia?
Although it’s legal to buy spore kits so that you can grow shrooms at home, growing them naturally, selling or consuming them is prohibited under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act.[1]
There are exceptions for when medical research or trials use psilocybin. Some of them have been promising in showing a positive effect when combining psilocybin and therapy for people with anxiety and depression.
And, further changes have happened this year to allow end-of-life patients to take psilocybin, which is a promising sign that shrooms may one day follow in the footsteps of cannabis and become legal (if and when there’s enough research and evidence to support the benefits of psilocybin)[2].

Magic Mushrooms That Grow in Nova Scotia
Although there are only a few species known to grow here, they do include the extremely potent ‘liberty cap’, and commonly known ‘banded mottlegill’. If you do plan to hunt for some mushrooms in Nova Scotia, look out for these four[3]:
- Panaeolus Cinctulus
These types of shrooms are often called ‘weed Panaeolus’ or ‘banded mottlegill’ and are commonly found growing worldwide. The best time to hunt for them is during spring and fall, and they grow on fertilized lawns and gardens, and on horse dung.
- Psilocybe aztecorum
Although relatively rare, Psilobybe aztercorum is still moderately high in its potency levels. Usually found in mountainous areas, they tend to grow on decayed leaves, wood, and sticks. Search for these shrooms between August and November.
- Psilocybe caerulipes
Psilocybe caerulipes are sometimes called ‘blue foot’ and can be found in deciduous forests. Look out for decaying birch, maple, and beech trees, and hardwood debris. The best time to find these shrooms is from May to December.
- Psilocybe semilanceata
Also known as liberty caps, these shrooms in Nova Scotia can be found growing in wet areas, such as meadows, pastures, and grassland. You can usually find them during the spring months.
With plenty of nature to explore and lively cities to meander around, Nova Scotia is truly a beautiful place to visit. The bonus of being able to order shrooms here means you can experience a mushroom trip in one of the most beautiful provinces in Canada.
If you do hunt for your own shrooms, be aware that some shrooms look very similar to poisonous mushrooms which can make you ill, or even result in death in some cases. Always use a trustworthy guide when picking shrooms naturally.
